Genesis: 18:10-14: And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
Has God ever told you something that made you laugh in unbelief? That was the experience of Sarah in Genesis 18:10-14. God specializes in throwing surprises even in seemingly hopeless situations. Abraham was very old and Sarah wasn’t just old but had become sterile medically. But when God speaks, everything hears. When He speaks, He calls things that are seemingly dead or non-existent into existence. A question we must continue to ask ourselves even in hopeless situation is “Is there anything too hard for the Lord?” This is the basis of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. With Him, nothing shall be impossible.
The scripture tells us Sarah laughed twice. First it was a laughter of doubt and unbelief but after the word of the Lord came, it became a laughter of happiness, joy and surprise. (Genesis 21:6). No matter what you are facing the word of God can give you a laughter of joy and happiness.
For several years, Sarah was barren and the enemy laughed at her. Psalm 22:7-8 says “All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.” This was basically the experience of Sarah after waiting for 24 years without a child. However, the fulfilment of God’s word changed the dimension of laughter. The enemies that laughed at her eventually laughed with her. Genesis 21:6 says “And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.” The word of the Lord doesn’t leave a man the same way. It brings about a change in his story. God can and will make your enemies to laugh and rejoice with you today. God can change your story such that in spheres of life where people have made mockery of you and laughed you to scorn, the same people will come to laugh with you and celebrate with you.
The final dimension we have is that God Himself can laugh at your enemies. This is the peak of it all. Psalms 37:12-13 says “The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for He seeth that his day is coming.” While your enemies are busy plotting evil, the Lord who sitteth upon the circles of the earth is laughing at them knowing fully well he will disappoint their devices and bring judgment upon them.
Whatsoever you are passing through, you only have to ask yourself, Is there anything too hard for the Lord?
