You Don’t Have to Fix Yourself First: 3 Truths About God’s Love

Share your love

If I have one minute of your time today, this is what I would love to share with you. It is the unconditional love of God, specifically three ways God loves you and me unconditionally.

Here is the scripture that contains these 3 divine ideas:

6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9 And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. Romans 5:6-10

God’s Love When We Were Helpless

First, the Bible says in Romans 5:6, “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.” This Bible verse describes the situation we all find ourselves in life—the state of complete helplessness, the state of absolute weakness, without any strength. I have not met a single person who is truly strong enough to withstand sin on their own, yet most times, we often want to fix ourselves before going to God for help. We often feel unworthy and need to fix our lives so that God can accept us. It is not a surprise that we fail again and again to meet that requirement of God’s righteousness on our own power. If we are left to ourselves to attain God’s righteousness by our will, we would be doomed forever!

The good news is that God never expects us to fix ourselves or be perfect before coming to Him. He wants us to come as we are so He can fix us. Only He can fix us and our problem of sin. Romans 5:6 tells us that “Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.” When did He die for us? When we were completely weak, at the end of ourselves, helpless and without strength. He came just on time, not a second late. As you can see, God has not asked us to fix ourselves. He did it all for us. All that is left is for us to accept what He has done for us on our behalf.

God’s Love When We Were Still Sinners

Second, the Bible says in Romans 5:7-8, “Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

I want you to read those words again. It says most people would not be willing to die for an upright person. That is a statement of fact—when it comes to death, most people don’t want to die. Please note the word ‘willing’. It is possible for many to say they can die for you, but when the reality comes, they will run. Not many people will keep that promise; they would fail and be found wanting. Then the Bible says, someone might be willing to die for a person who is extremely good.

Let me digress a little bit. Did you notice that being upright is a necessary condition, but not a sufficient condition for winning favor with men? Being upright is like the foundation, but if anyone stops there, they would not command influence with most people. There is something we all must add to our uprightness—it is being good. In fact, in Acts 11:24, the Bible says that “Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord.”

Yet, we read in Romans 5:8 that “though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good,” suggesting that as great as being good to others is, it is rare to find someone willing to die for a good person.

What no man could do for an upright and good man, God did for sinners—for you and me as sinners—in our struggle with sin and failure to meet His standards. Romans 5:8 says, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” It is indeed great love, not little love, for God to send His only Son, Christ Jesus, to die for us—not when we are upright, good, or have fixed ourselves and are holy, but while we were still sinners. Isn’t that good news? God’s way of love is unconditional. He showed us His love when we did not merit or deserve it, and we will never merit His love. We must quit trying to earn His love, favor, and righteousness because we can never meet the requirements. The only response we have is to accept His love as we are, because He has already paid the price for us.

God’s Love When We Were Still Enemies

Third, the Bible says in Romans 5:9-10, “And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.”

Take note of that: we have been made right in God’s sight by the Blood of Christ. Not that we will be made right—it is already done. When we were weak, helpless, without strength, and sinners. And because of what He has already done for us, He will certainly save us from all the condemnation and judgments that we rightly deserve, including any condemnation that the devil might want to bring to us based on the offenses we commit in the past, now or in the future. The Blood of Christ Jesus sufficiently paid the price and settled the demand for justice.

But that is not where I really want to stop. Verse 10 of Romans 5 speaks to the third issue I wanted to show you. It says, “Our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies.” Read that again and again until it overwhelms you and lightens up your heart. When was our friendship with God restored? The Bible says, “…while we were still his enemies…”

Yes, you read that clearly. Sin made us God’s enemies, but God did not wait for us to fix ourselves to help us. He knows that is an impossible task for any man or woman to do on their own. Rather than leave us to ourselves to struggle and perish, His love sprang into action and restored us to friendship with Him by the death of His Son, Jesus Christ.

God’s Love Restores and Saves Us Completely

So think about it: you are now a friend of God. There is nothing you can do to earn His friendship or change that reality except to accept it as a gift from Him. He has paid the price through the death of Christ Jesus. All that He requires of you is to believe and accept the price He paid for your soul on your behalf. As if that is not enough, the Bible adds that because we have been restored to friendship with God through the death of Christ, we will certainly be saved through the life of His Son.

Jesus did not only die, He rose from death. His death set us free from sin and restored us to friendship with God. His life, on the other hand, brings us salvation, which includes deliverance, safety, preservation, healing, and soundness.
